How to Teleport: Action Filmmaking Tutorial

How to Teleport!

Hey guys! Today I’m going to share with you, HOW TO TELEPORT like I did in my last video! First, here are the visual examples in my behind-the-scenes video.. read on for a more detailed explanation of my VFX process!

HOW TO TELEPORT (GTA V BTS)

Now for the TUTORIAL!

To achieve my version of teleportation, I first watched the Film Riot tutorial on how to teleport. During his tutorial, he recommends to buy some vfx and sound fx packs.. but I like to free stuff, so I just searched and downloaded similar ones from youtube. Here is the shockwave video I ended up using.

HOW TO TELEPORT: FILMING PROCESS
I filmed everything on a tripod, to make it easier on myself to stitch the shots together in post..

First, I got a CLEAN PLATE. This is an empty shot with nothing frame except for the background. You ALWAYS want to have one of these, just in case you have to paint a part of the frame out. You lay this footage as a base layer under your footage in the timeline.

Next, I got the ACTING beats. This is where I reacted to the cars teleporting in, as well as when I teleported out of the video at the end. I tried several different options, and planned my edit in advance so I could cut in between this locked off “master” shot, and some handheld mid/close-ups to give it a more organic feel. In the future, I think I will add some small wobble to the frame, after compositing everything together.

Lastly, the CARS; I drove each car into the frame, hid behind it (or in the bed of the truck) and SHOOK the cars to make them look like they actually dropped out of the sky! I feel like this adds a lot to the final product, and I love mixing “practical effects” (stuff you can do on the day, with camera) with visual effects, to make a more believable effect.

HOW TO TELEPORT: EDITING PROCESS
I usually use After Effects for my videos, but this time I didn’t have to. I did most of the compositing right in Premiere Pro! (The only shot I had to use after effects for, was to make a more precise layer mask for when I teleport out of the video at the end.) Here’s a quick breakdown of what I did..
1 – The CLEAN PLATE goes on bottom video layer (track 1).
2 – The ACTING shot goes on top of the clean plate.
3 – Whichever car appears goes on top. I lowered the opacity of the car footage and lined it up to get the correct timing of the shake. Then I trimmed the car clip to start at the “teleport in” point, and I applied a “crop” effect to the footage. (You can find all these simple effects just by typing them into the “effects” window) I slid the left side of the crop until my character was visible, then I turned up the “feather” of crop edge to blend it in.
And importantly, you do not need to see the parts really well, but for those that you are required to lead a healthy and effective treatment order cialis online frankkrauseautomotive.com of men’s erectile dysfunction.

BOOM! That is how to teleport cars. Here is the final result!

CHEAT CODE: Episode 1 – GTA V

HOW TO TELEPORT: EXTRA TIPS
The only thing I did differently when teleporting myself out of the video at the end, was I overlayed a video clip of the above “shockwave” footage over myself as I teleported out. I didn’t use the shockwave for the cars appearing, because you don’t see that in GTA V. The shockwave clip I used has on a black background, so I added a “Luma Key” effect to the shockwave footage.

For the SOUND effects, I used a mixture of 2 sounds. A bullet flying by and a low explosion in the distance, to simulate the teleport sound effect. I layered these a little, and wham! Teleport sound effect. I get all of my sound effects from FREESOUND.org

And that was it! That is how to teleport, according to my own “gorilla” method!

DAEDALUS: a new spin on the Mirror’s Edge universe

‘Mirror’s Edge: DAEDALUS’ is the title for an upcoming webseries being produced by Michael Lehr and Oscar Leiva.

Mirror's Edge Daedalus poster

The production team is putting a unique spin on the massive parkour & freerunning game franchise developed by EA games in 2008.

Mirror’s Edge takes place in a dystopian society where an unnamed city’s state of bliss is the achievement of a domineering and totalitarian regime that monitors all communication, controls the media…and operates a sham democracy. A network of ‘runners’, including the main character, Faith, are used as couriers to transmit messages while evading government surveillance. –Wikipedia

Here is the project’s IndieGoGo pitch video, which is looking to raise a modest $7000 in order to bring their dream into reality.

I have been an avid parkour practitioner for the last 6 years, and I loved playing Mirror’s Edge on the PS3 when it came out. The stunt coordinator on Mirror’s Edge: DAEDALUS will be my friend and training partner, Narayana Cabral, so I’m confident that the level of action and parkour choreography in this series will be up to par. Knowing this group of people and the work they’ve done in the past, I’m very excited to see their final product.

It would be awesome if you guys could show them some support by sharing the IndieGoGo link and perhaps liking their FaceBook page!

Site of the Week: The Stunt People

The Stunt People is an all-in-one independent action performer, filmmaker, and fan resource/news site. I have been following them for almost 5 years and they’re my recommendation for you to check out this week!

The Stunt People logo

This site, run by action artist Eric Jacobus, follows a group of martial artists, acrobats, stunt performers, and filmmakers who work out of the San Francisco Bay Area (California, USA). The members of this awesome collaboration call themselves “The Stunt People”. They have produced several independent feature films, and continue to develop new projects while releasing youtube videos and tutorials on a regular basis.

The Stunt People website features a well-kept and informative Forum, a News page for their projects, and a Store where you can purchase their films and memorabilia.

Eric Jacobus is the founder of this cool project. His expertise in the action film genre stems from producing/starring in several independent action films, and working closely with the San Francisco stunt community to help it expand. He has starred in six feature length films (and countless short films), and is known for his comedic on-screen persona and high-flying acrobatic maneuvers. Among his films are the cult classic Contour, and the critically-acclaimed Death Grip. You can also watch Eric perform as “Stryker” in the second season of the Mortal Kombat Legacy series, premiering later this year. (click image to watch the trailer)

I first stumbled onto the site back when I lived in Scotland, and through the forum I spent several years making friends in independent action filmmaking circles all around the world. I scoured the forum in fascination as I learned important skills as a filmmaker and performer, and got useful feedback on my personal projects. The Stunt People forum inspired me greatly and was one of the main factors that helped me make my decision to move out to Los Angeles and pursue stunts full time.

The quality, attention to detail, and ingenuity that the Stunt People team puts into their work is admirable. As an action fan and fellow filmmaker, I am looking forward to working with them soon..

So when you get a minute, and if you want to learn new things while broadening your horizons and making new friends, definitely check out TheStuntPeople.com, their forums, and the pages below!!

Whisper Gang photos released – Grayson: Earth One

On Friday night, photographer Jimmy Bui released some “off character” photos of the Whisper Gang from the set of the new Nightwing webseries, Grayson: Earth One. These pictures give us a glimpse of what these characters will look like in the upcoming webseries.

What we see here is a collection of “gag” photos taken during a poster photoshoot for their marketing campaign, which is currently raising funds on IndieGoGo. The Grayson: Earth One concept delves into an alternative reality of the popular comic series, Nightwing. In this version the hero was never adopted by Batman, and never became Robin..giving the creators room to weave us a much darker story.

The Whisper Gang are the main group of antagonists who have a deep rooted impact on Richard Grayson (Nightwing) in the comic series. The upcoming episodes of this web series will reveal the dark relationship between the main character and this group of outcasts.

We can’t wait to see where this series goes..but for now, enjoy this light-hearted photo set, and see if you can recognize me! 😉

Grayson: Earth One premiers it’s Nightwing origin story!

On Sunday morning, P3 Productions released a pilot for their latest webseries. They call it Grayson: Earth One, and it is an origin story for the super hero known as “Nightwing”. I worked on this briefly, helping out choreograph and perform the fight scenes.

Grayson Earth One Nightwing Poster

Writer/Director Hisonni Johnson pitches to us the concept that this story happens on Earth One (a clever plot workaround used to justify changes to the DC Universe). I quite like the music and feeling of the whole episode, especially the character design homage to one of my favorite movies of all time, The Crow.

“The twist here is that Richard Grayson has never had the good fortune of being adopted as a child by Bruce Wayne, thus never becoming the boy wonder. Instead, we have a Richard Grayson that had to fend for himself on the unforgiving streets of Gotham and, even worse, the streets of Bludhaven. A character that has to overcome years of dog eat dog mentality to become a selfless and kind individual. To ultimately fulfill his destiny and become a HERO.” – Hisonni Johnson (Director)

You can watch the episode here:

They have gathered over 11,000 views in just two days, an impressive feat for a brand new video series. I had fun working fights on this project..and if they manage to meet their funding goals to make a whole series, that will mean the fight team gets to return with more action and a bigger budget to really play!

Thanks for checking out the campaign, guys. I will write some more about the juicy details with pics/videos from the “fight scene all nighter” as the campaign progresses.. but until then, again, please help us spread the word!

Zombie makeup and my first car hit.

Another quick post..so last weekend I worked on a pretty cool project for Rob Pinkston (coconut head from Ned’s Declassified). And I have to say, this was one of the best sets I’ve ever been on, and the best film crews I’ve seen in action. We filmed at CBS and this set was arguably the most-efficiently run (and the most fun) that I’ve  seen yet.

With the director and vfx supervisor.

I’ve always been a fan of Horror films, and Zombies hold a special place in my heart. My favorite zombie film is 28 Days Later, I love the music and the feeling of the story that movie shows you. As an action artist and a person who is always looking for a new challenge, I’ve been writing a couple of my own concepts down to explore the genre. (Hopefully the future will help me bring you guys my ideas in finished project form)

Anyways, I knew that one day I would finally get put in full zombie makeup, so when I got the call to work on this project I jumped right on board! There were no fights in this one, but my character does get hit by a car (and run over repeatedly). I really enjoyed acting the zombie part as well, I got to play the main zombie antagonist and it was cool actually having a script (no lines) as a zombie..it was fun getting in character!

The makeup artist is very good at what she does, and I think I ended up looking pretty scary..

I see you!

The most interesting part of sitting in makeup, was getting glue stick smeared over my eyebrows so the latex wouldn’t rip them out later. I also found a childish joy in peeling the latex off of my face and hands after the shoot (which reminded me of putting glue on my hands in middle school and waiting for it to dry before peeling it off).

Having a bunch of latex on your face does have some down sides, like when you can’t do anything that will make you break a sweat (otherwise you will suffer). The makeup did get a little hot, and I started worrying about parts of it falling off from the sweat (I was running and throwing myself at a windshield). Nothing did end up falling off, so my conclusion on the zombie makeup? I love it!! I can’t wait to work on a horror feature film in the future..

It is important to note that erections will not occur you can find out more levitra uk from merely taking this medication.
Here is probably the most striking picture I’ve seen from set..

Ominous Zombie fire..

Part 2 of the awesome weekend involved me running full speed at a car and throwing myself at the windshield…I can’t say any more until the video comes out, but I can’t wait to see it and show you guys!

Now I have to go and scrub the green make-up off of my bath tub!

Until next time,

Rustic
