Site of the Week: The Stunt People

The Stunt People is an all-in-one independent action performer, filmmaker, and fan resource/news site. I have been following them for almost 5 years and they’re my recommendation for you to check out this week!

The Stunt People logo

This site, run by action artist Eric Jacobus, follows a group of martial artists, acrobats, stunt performers, and filmmakers who work out of the San Francisco Bay Area (California, USA). The members of this awesome collaboration call themselves “The Stunt People”. They have produced several independent feature films, and continue to develop new projects while releasing youtube videos and tutorials on a regular basis.

The Stunt People website features a well-kept and informative Forum, a News page for their projects, and a Store where you can purchase their films and memorabilia.

Eric Jacobus is the founder of this cool project. His expertise in the action film genre stems from producing/starring in several independent action films, and working closely with the San Francisco stunt community to help it expand. He has starred in six feature length films (and countless short films), and is known for his comedic on-screen persona and high-flying acrobatic maneuvers. Among his films are the cult classic Contour, and the critically-acclaimed Death Grip. You can also watch Eric perform as “Stryker” in the second season of the Mortal Kombat Legacy series, premiering later this year. (click image to watch the trailer)

I first stumbled onto the site back when I lived in Scotland, and through the forum I spent several years making friends in independent action filmmaking circles all around the world. I scoured the forum in fascination as I learned important skills as a filmmaker and performer, and got useful feedback on my personal projects. The Stunt People forum inspired me greatly and was one of the main factors that helped me make my decision to move out to Los Angeles and pursue stunts full time.

The quality, attention to detail, and ingenuity that the Stunt People team puts into their work is admirable. As an action fan and fellow filmmaker, I am looking forward to working with them soon..

So when you get a minute, and if you want to learn new things while broadening your horizons and making new friends, definitely check out TheStuntPeople.com, their forums, and the pages below!!

LUA PHAT: Vietnam’s first Action Fantasy film

Lua Phat (“Once upon a time in Vietnam”) proclaims itself as Vietnam’s first Action Fantasy film. Brought to us by action actor and first-time director Dustin Nguyen, the film is set to be released on August 22, 2013.

My friend Lee Golden, of FCSyndicate, turned me onto this project recently, and I’d like to share it with you.

Lua Phat was originally titled “Monk on Fire”, but the name was recently changed to “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam”. The action film is described as an “Eastern Western”, and features motorcycle-riding kung fu monks, an epic historical setting, and outstanding large-scale battles.

Watch the trailer for Lua Phat below.

“Once upon a time in Vietnam”, produced by the Vietnam Media Corp, spent 5 years in production. It was written and directed by Dustin Nguyen, who also played one of the lead roles. On May 17, a five minute introduction on “Lua Phat” and its two-minute trailer were shown at the Cannes film festival. It was pitched as Vietnam’s first fantasy action film, and is directed by Vietnamese-American director Dustin Nguyen, The showing attracted considerable attention and the president of the Weinstein Company, one of the US’ largest film distributors, said he couldn’t help but give the film a standing ovation.

I’m excited to see this film when it comes out, and I will be closely watching their media campaign as the date draws near. As an action actor who also produces some of his own content, I am rooting for Dustin Nguyen’s film to do well and eventually get a US release.

Barrio Brawler: The Asylum’s gritty answer to the Undisputed series

Barrio Brawler, a gritty mixed martial arts fight film to be released on June 25th, premiered their trailer Tuesday on the film news site TwitchFilm.com.

actor Morgan Benoit backflip kicks his opponent in the face

The central story revolves around a martial arts instructor who is forced to fight in an underground tournament in order to protect his family. Now, while we have all seen this scenario played out on screen in the past, writer Jose Montesinos’ fresh execution promises to offer a primal grittiness and a new perspective. Plus, what can be better for the fight film connoisseur, then to have the opportunity to study another interpretation of highly skilled martial artists engage in a no-holds-barred violent fight tournament? Sign me up! (You can watch the trailer below).

I have been anticipating Barrio Brawler’s release for the last 6 months. My friend and training partner, action actor Morgan Benoit, informed me he had a role as one of the main characters in the film. From what I know so far, Morgan plays one of the main fighters. You can see him (clearly looking like a badass) at 1:09 in the trailer below.

As a fan of the Undisputed film franchise, as well as most (not all) fight films, I’m excited to see this. I know most of the fight performers personally, and I can foresee cult status for this project, as the fights are guaranteed to blow you away.

Barrio Brawler was produced by the independent production house, The Asylum, and features some stunt performers from the San Francisco based group, The Stunt People.

The film is due to be released on June 25 of this year, in AMC Theatres.

CHO LON (intense martial art film) banned in Vietnam: Worldwide consequences

According to popular action film news blog Film Combat Syndicate, a highly anticipated Vietnamese martial arts action film has been banned by the Vietnam censorship board! Government censorship at its finest, people.

On Friday morning, global cinema news site TwitchFilm.com wrote..

Cho Lon violated the ‘Law of Cinema’ when showing scenes of gangsters blatantly set in battle, chaotic fighting with knives, swords, machetes, with blood spilling everywhere … without the interference of government, polices, people or any other social forces.

Recently the producers sent the edited version of Cho Lon, which cut some violent scenes and inserted some appropriate scenes. But it’s still not repaired overall, so the Central Board of Film Evaluation of the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism shall not issue licenses for Cho Lon.

I’m not entirely surprised at the reaction of some aged censor board members, but more so at the consequences of such censorship in today’s “global marketplace”. One would think that a film such as this could still bypass the government censorship and find a way to be leaked online.. but the withdrawal of their distribution licenses virtually bans the filmmakers from making any money from such an endeavour. It’s very unfortunate to see a project with so much hype, and work put behind it, go to some “storage vault” with other banned films.

Here is the trailer (click on “cc” for English subtitles):
Moreover the potent capsule is acknowledged to be find this site purchase cheap levitra a challenge rooting from numerous aspects.

The fight scenes in the trailer look ridiculously good. I am a constant student of the art of movement, and I would have loved to study the coordinator’s and performers’ creativity in detail.

As someone who’s worked, and literally bled (which I’m sure happened on set in this film), for projects that haven’t been able to see the light of day..I’m devastated to see this happen to a project which is in its final stages. Jokingly, I suggested that someone should make their own distribution “agency” which would help banned films find an audience.. and perhaps funding of some sort.

QUESTION: How do you feel about government-level censorship, and its global effects? Would you like to find a way to watch films such as this?

Site of the Week: Film Combat Syndicate

It is with great pleasure, that today I present to you with the Film Combat Syndicate blog (an answer to action movie junkies’ prayers everywhere)!

I have been following these guys for the last couple of months, and I am convinced that they run one of the most updated, and most relevant action film websites I’ve seen yet. I first heard about Lee Golden (the man behind the awesomeness) when one of my friends shared this link to his site – http://filmcombatsyndicate.blogspot.com

If you are a fan of action films big or small, mainstream or independent.. then FCS have probably written about it. They pitch themselves as “A non-profit blog dedicated to promoting and sharing a variety of news and updates about mainstream/independent action films, mainly martial arts entertainment, stunt performers, as well as bios and interviews wherever possible”.

On their site you will find some honest film reviews given from an action fan’s perspective, and some great interviews with stunt performers and action actors that you might be a fan of. I’ve also found it to be an amazing tool to discover new action films to watch in order to expand my own knowledge.

The main way I keep up with them is through their facebook page (which is updated several times a day) – https://www.facebook.com/FilmCombatSyndicate

They also have a Twitter feed – @FCSyndicate
