Zombie Fitness blog prepares you for the apocalypse

“Fitness for the apocalypse” is the message behind the unique fitness blog, Zombie Fit.

Site of the Week, the Zombie Fitness website prepares you for any physical situation, such as the Apocalypse.

I’ve been away from this site for a couple of weeks while working on a couple upcoming projects (websites, videos) with my friends, but today I’d like to share with you one of my secret training weapons!

Chicago based “ZombieFit.org” is a website which posts daily workouts to physically prepare you for any situation..and what better way to train for any possible outcome, than to prepare yourself to be physically fit for the improbable Zombie apocalypse?

The Zombie Fit workouts are a balanced fusion of Parkour and CrossFit exercises. The curriculum typically consists of 3 days of short workouts followed by a rest day in which you are recommended to stretch and mentally prepare for the next round.

The dedicated parkour group behind Zombie Fit are very smart in their approach, as they make sure everyone can start and progress through their training efficiently. Every workout is split into 3 choices of difficulty; Etudiant, Avancee, and Traceur. The workouts don’t take more than 20mins to complete, and can be done several times a day.

I would recommend for my readers to give a couple of their workouts a try, and perhaps add them into your daily routine. (I find keeping a journal of my workouts helps with motivation and consistency) Another good feature in their writing, is the occasional tutorial on how to perform the parkour movements required for some of the workouts.

“By preparing for the Impossible, you will be ready for the Improbable.”

I found ZombieFit.org back when I was living in Scotland. After experiencing a measurable change in my fitness as well as my personal parkour and tricking practice, I have been recommending the Zombie Fit site to my students and friends ever since.

Epic Chick Fight slams Family Guy into the real world.

Epic Chick Fight is an extremely, brutally entertaining new fight scene from director Leo Kei Angelos. The youtube video is a live action epic Family Guy chicken fight, filmed with two ferocious females!

The video is based on several of the popular gag cutaways from the hit TV show, Family Guy. Epic Chick Fight features two of my friends, real life stunt women Jesse Graff and Tree O’ Toole, and shows these chicks battling it out in a no-holds-barred fight for sweet revenge.

Watch the video below:

I heard about this project several months ago, and I’ve been impatiently anticipating its release. The talented group behind Epic Chick Fight managed to raise nearly $3000 on their IndieGoGo campaign, and utilized a lot of the stunt industry’s working professionals throughout production. The talented performers, the innovative use of locations through the fight, the production value and attention to detail in this make it worth watching and leave you panting for more.

Tree O' Toole and Jesse Graff face off in the middle of several drifting and exploding cars in Epic Chick Fight, the Family Guy vs Chicken live action fight scene.

It’s really inspiring to see some of the stunt industry’s professionals reaching out to the online community with projects like these. If you watch the credits to the video, you will see just how many industry professionals put their time and effort into making this a reality. Hopefully, the YouTube future will bring us more professionally made projects such as these. As an action fan, filmmaker, and performer, I’m ready to welcome the professional stunt community into the world of online distribution. I look forward to producing and working on some more juicy projects like these in the near future, and bridging the gap between the hungry action fans and the hard working and talented stunt community.

Longevity in your Parkour Training

Longevity, responsibility, and sustainability.. Today I’d like to share an inspiring video with you and talk about the importance of sustainable practices in your parkour training.

My example is Beau, the 47 year old freerunner from London, UK. Check out the video that Tim Shieff (Livewire) made for him below..

Beau didn’t start parkour until after turning 40, and over the course of the last 7 years has achieved arguably the best shape of his life. You can tell by his mannerisms and movement through space that he is in it for the long haul. For someone like him, it is paramount to practice intelligently in order to keep his knees undamaged and enjoy unrestricted movement throughout his whole life.

So how is he able to move like that at 47? Beau focuses a lot on ground work in his training, which means when he goes to learn bigger moves, he does so safely with solid muscle memory to fall back on. You can read more about Beau here.

When I lived and taught Parkour back in Scotland, I often trained with the guys from Parkour Generations and Glasgow Parkour. From them, I learned many parkour workout possibilities requiring almost nothing but flat ground..

Rustic B doing a handstand in the middle of a road in Jordanville, NY

If you want to do a certain huge roof gap, why risk your life while training it 6 stories up when you can do it safely on the ground?

Thanks to GPC, the workouts we did with Dundee Parkour started getting more creative..one example is a long set of rails we had to train on. What we came up with was to try and balance in different positions (walk, cat crawl, pistol squat) all the way down the rail. If someone fell off, they had to do 10 pushups and start from the beginning. In this way a simple set of rails became a several hour long workout, with a satisfactory burn of the quads and triceps for days afterwards.

If you can really push your patience with the basics, then you will almost certainly be ready when the time calls for that roof gap, cat leap.

In contrast, I see too many kids destroying and getting ahead of themselves in their training habits today. After watching amazing compilation videos, they are running for the gyms and training spots with a limited view on the discipline..I know, I used to be one of them. These people inevitably jump into trying moves they aren’t ready for.. that’s when training gains become unsustainable, and injuries are bound to happen.

How to cialis properien icks.org relax muscles after a workout? Anytime you stress your muscles during a workout, you create microscopic tears in the muscle fibres.
It’s hard to focus on personal benefits and internal meditation when your mind is blinded by exciting new possibilities, but remember that consistent training and drilling will get you further than bursts of excitement.

Rustic B doing a flashkick, a back flip kick, for an Urban Fist Stunt Team, UrbanFistTV video.

Take Jackie Chan as another example, he is 59 years old and is still going strong! He had a very tough career and has put his body under a lot of stress..but he did it all with longevity in mind. Jackie diligently practices Tai Chi to relax and replenish his body.

If we love parkour, tricking, martial arts, or any sport, we need to remember the importance of maintaining healthy joints, muscles, and tendons. We need to make a conscious effort to take precautions against needless injuries, and put the time into stretching, warming up, centering ourselves, and understanding technique.

Anyway, to sum up my points..
– Take care of your body and you will thank yourself in the future.
– Always center yourself and come back to why you are doing something. This will help you to continue training and to avoid plateaus.
– Realize you don’t need to impress anyone, and small consistent goals will get you further in the long run.
– Always strive to stay consistent in your training.

Until next time,

DAEDALUS: a new spin on the Mirror’s Edge universe

‘Mirror’s Edge: DAEDALUS’ is the title for an upcoming webseries being produced by Michael Lehr and Oscar Leiva.

Mirror's Edge Daedalus poster

The production team is putting a unique spin on the massive parkour & freerunning game franchise developed by EA games in 2008.

Mirror’s Edge takes place in a dystopian society where an unnamed city’s state of bliss is the achievement of a domineering and totalitarian regime that monitors all communication, controls the media…and operates a sham democracy. A network of ‘runners’, including the main character, Faith, are used as couriers to transmit messages while evading government surveillance. –Wikipedia

Here is the project’s IndieGoGo pitch video, which is looking to raise a modest $7000 in order to bring their dream into reality.

I have been an avid parkour practitioner for the last 6 years, and I loved playing Mirror’s Edge on the PS3 when it came out. The stunt coordinator on Mirror’s Edge: DAEDALUS will be my friend and training partner, Narayana Cabral, so I’m confident that the level of action and parkour choreography in this series will be up to par. Knowing this group of people and the work they’ve done in the past, I’m very excited to see their final product.

It would be awesome if you guys could show them some support by sharing the IndieGoGo link and perhaps liking their FaceBook page!

Stay Consistent in your Training

The biggest step-up you can give yourself above the competition in any field, is to be consistent in your approach. Today I’d like to briefly share with you the importance and benefits of staying consistent in your training.

Rustic B doing a handstand in New York. An example of staying consistent in your training.

Whether your pursuits are Physical (Working Out, Martial Arts..), Mental (Writing, Drawing..), or Spiritual (Meditation) ..one thing that is paramount in accomplishing your goals, is consistently giving yourself goals that are reasonably achievable and form a clear path to success.

It’s too common for us to start crazy new workout routines and burn ourselves out after a couple of days. Likewise, a fledgling painter might overzealously purchase a bunch of paints and canvases, yet never use them to their full extent.

When I was first teaching myself backflips, they would always be inconsistent. To me that meant gambling every time with how the landing would turn out. Would I ram my knees into the ground, would my ankles suffer, or would I over rotate? Due to fear of being injured, my tricking sessions would be few and far between..and I was stuck in a vicious cycle of bad tricks, due to not training, due to being afraid of bad tricks.

How did I over-come this problem? Instead of looking at training sessions as 2 hour long ordeals, I gave myself a simple goal of doing 5 minutes a day. Not even that..I gave myself the goal of doing at least one back flip per day. I spent the next two weeks training every day, with sessions ranging from 5 minutes to 2-3 hours, depending on how I felt.. and what was the result? I am now able to back flip anywhere, anytime.

Rustic Bodomov doing a backflip on the beach, in Florida

Giving yourself small, achievable goals with room to expand is the key to success. Don’t let yourself get scared of the task ahead of you. Just show up and teach yourself to enjoy!

So to recap, how can we stay consistent with our training? I will give you some examples pertaining to working out, but these can easily be transferred into any other field.
The male will still get orgasm, but his penile organ will have difficulty remaining hard for romantic intimacy. cheap cialis midwayfire.com

1) Start now, and change your mind-set to think of everything as a process. Don’t tell yourself “I will start..on Monday”, this gives your mind a psychological break in space-time and a chance to have a last “hurrah” with bad habits..but why not just start today? Remember, it is a LIFE-style choice.

2) Never skip two/three days in a row. You can take rest breaks, but until your self discipline is truly built up enough (a process of months/years), there is always the danger of ‘falling off’.

3) Set up your training with easily manageable time slots. When I must be brief, I think in half-hour slots (10 mins workout, 10 mins stretch, 10 mins shower). If you have more than half an hour, then you can always elaborate.

3) Give yourself achievable goals and set reasonable expectations. We all want to improve fast, but just because you can’t do a set of 15 pull ups today, doesn’t mean that you won’t get there soon. Break up your workout into simple steps. Do 5 pull ups, but stay consistent..

4) K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) …just listen to your body, focus on how good your exercise makes you feel, and do what you find works best for you. Enjoy your life, apply some self-discipline for true happiness.

I hope you found this post helpful and I didn’t go off on a tangent..now let’s all stay consistent in what we do!

Pittsburgh’s budding Parkour scene

One visit to almost any district in the city of Pittsburgh, and you will be as convinced as I am; Pittsburgh is an amazing place to learn Parkour & Freerunning.

Parkour training spot in Oakland, near the University of Pittsburgh

Steel City is known around the world for the steel industry that was bustling here in the 20th century. It is also known as the “City of Bridges”, with almost 500 different bridges throughout the area..and some that haven’t even been counted. This industrial background set a precedent for the elaborate, Neo-Gothic influenced architecture we see around the city. Luckily for us traceurs, these spots lend them selves extremely well as training spots for Parkour!

Also, the city provides great backdrops for parkour videos.. (you can find some video examples here)

Pittsburgh's neo-gothic architecture in Oakland

So what is parkour?

Parkour – The art of getting from point A to point B as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

Let’s imagine you’re getting chased, and you are running in a straight line away from your attacker (a logical assumption).. all of a sudden your escape is blocked by rails, walls, drops, etc. What do you do? Do you waste time by going around the obstacle and risk being caught? HECK NO! You gotta use your awesome parkour skills to get over, under, through the obstacles (eg, you gotta parkour that sh*t).

University of Pittsburgh campus parkour spot

Back to Pittsburgh.. A couple of weeks ago I re-visited my home and got a chance to re-connect with the amazing parkour environments of this city! I grew up in Pittsburgh and started learning Parkour at 16. FIrst, I started learning by just jumping over trash cans and the like, until my eyes opened to the possibilities of the unique training spots in this city. I was able to find a spot to train just about anywhere.. from the University of Pittsburgh’s campus in Oakland, to Allegheny Square, Mt Lebanon, any of the CCAC Campuses, and even the Mckees Rocks bottoms.

parkour rooftop spot in oakland, pittsburgh, pa

When my interest was first sparked in the direction of this discipline, I met up with the Pittsburgh-based parkour group, Team Sanjuu (formerly PKFR International). I trained PK with them for about a year, and then left for college in 2008. Back when I left there was only a handful of people trying to learn the fledgling art of parkour.

Today there are many more practitioners in Pittsburgh, and the community is growing every day. Between the University of Pittsburgh’s own Panther Parkour club, Team Sanjuu, and other groups that spring up every day, parkour & freerunning jams and events are being hosted every couple of weeks. These are usually open to all levels of Traceurs (parkour practitioners), and the “real” global parkour community is one of the most welcoming to beginners. Since learning parkour is a lot about self-realization, fellow traceurs share tips and insights openly with each other.

If you are in or near Pittsburgh and want to learn parkour and freerunning, I encourage you to just get outside and explore! If you would like some guidance from experienced practitioners, get in touch with one of the groups I linked to above. Or if you prefer to learn on your own, YouTube (and the internet at large) has a lot of good tutorials!

Site of the Week: The Stunt People

The Stunt People is an all-in-one independent action performer, filmmaker, and fan resource/news site. I have been following them for almost 5 years and they’re my recommendation for you to check out this week!

The Stunt People logo

This site, run by action artist Eric Jacobus, follows a group of martial artists, acrobats, stunt performers, and filmmakers who work out of the San Francisco Bay Area (California, USA). The members of this awesome collaboration call themselves “The Stunt People”. They have produced several independent feature films, and continue to develop new projects while releasing youtube videos and tutorials on a regular basis.

The Stunt People website features a well-kept and informative Forum, a News page for their projects, and a Store where you can purchase their films and memorabilia.

Eric Jacobus is the founder of this cool project. His expertise in the action film genre stems from producing/starring in several independent action films, and working closely with the San Francisco stunt community to help it expand. He has starred in six feature length films (and countless short films), and is known for his comedic on-screen persona and high-flying acrobatic maneuvers. Among his films are the cult classic Contour, and the critically-acclaimed Death Grip. You can also watch Eric perform as “Stryker” in the second season of the Mortal Kombat Legacy series, premiering later this year. (click image to watch the trailer)

Eric Jacobus aiming a gun as Stryker from the Mortal Kombat Legacy series

I first stumbled onto the site back when I lived in Scotland, and through the forum I spent several years making friends in independent action filmmaking circles all around the world. I scoured the forum in fascination as I learned important skills as a filmmaker and performer, and got useful feedback on my personal projects. The Stunt People forum inspired me greatly and was one of the main factors that helped me make my decision to move out to Los Angeles and pursue stunts full time.

The quality, attention to detail, and ingenuity that the Stunt People team puts into their work is admirable. As an action fan and fellow filmmaker, I am looking forward to working with them soon..

So when you get a minute, and if you want to learn new things while broadening your horizons and making new friends, definitely check out TheStuntPeople.com, their forums, and the pages below!!

LUA PHAT: Vietnam’s first Action Fantasy film

Lua Phat (“Once upon a time in Vietnam”) proclaims itself as Vietnam’s first Action Fantasy film. Brought to us by action actor and first-time director Dustin Nguyen, the film is set to be released on August 22, 2013.

Lua Phat, vietnamese action fantasy film poster

My friend Lee Golden, of FCSyndicate, turned me onto this project recently, and I’d like to share it with you.

Lua Phat was originally titled “Monk on Fire”, but the name was recently changed to “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam”. The action film is described as an “Eastern Western”, and features motorcycle-riding kung fu monks, an epic historical setting, and outstanding large-scale battles.

Watch the trailer for Lua Phat below.

“Once upon a time in Vietnam”, produced by the Vietnam Media Corp, spent 5 years in production. It was written and directed by Dustin Nguyen, who also played one of the lead roles. On May 17, a five minute introduction on “Lua Phat” and its two-minute trailer were shown at the Cannes film festival. It was pitched as Vietnam’s first fantasy action film, and is directed by Vietnamese-American director Dustin Nguyen, The showing attracted considerable attention and the president of the Weinstein Company, one of the US’ largest film distributors, said he couldn’t help but give the film a standing ovation.

I’m excited to see this film when it comes out, and I will be closely watching their media campaign as the date draws near. As an action actor who also produces some of his own content, I am rooting for Dustin Nguyen’s film to do well and eventually get a US release.

Martial Arts Tricking: A Beginner’s Resource

So you want to learn the awesome art of Martial Arts Tricking? Well you’ve come to the right place! Below you will find a list of resources to get you kicking, flipping, and twisting on your way to being a modern day ninja!

Rustic B performing a Martial Arts Tricking move, the cheat gainer

QUESTION: What is Tricking?

Tricking (short for “martial arts tricking”) is the informal name of a relatively new underground alternative sport movement, combining martial arts, gymnastics, and other activities to create an “aesthetic blend of flips, kicks, and twists.” Tricking incorporates a variety of moves from different arts such as flips from gymnastics, 540 kick from Taekwondo, butterfly twist from Wushu, and double leg from Capoeira. Tricking is recognizable by its flashy kicks, complex flips and twists, and its highly stylized movements which separate it from other arts. An individual who practises tricking is typically referred to as a “trickster” or “tricker”. – TrickingAustralia.com

Determining when tricking began is impossible, as it is a living sport that experiences massive change at the will of its community. For some people, tricking is still only a supplement to their martial arts background. For others, tricking is a physical outlet for self-expression that is governed by very few principles. This fluidity is a defining characteristic of tricking. Due to the lack of recorded history, it is simpler to say where tricking came from rather than when.

Here is a video put together by a really cool trickster and UK Stuntman, Munks, that I usually show people as an example to what tricking looks like..

So.. you’re convinced that you want to become a modern day ninja, and make friends in the rapidly growing tricking community? Let’s begin! Below I have listed the websites and tricking resources that I have found the most helpful. I will add to this list as time goes on..

Forums – Online discussion boards are a good place to introduce yourself and meet fellow tricksters. You can seek advice, find tutorials, and watch newly released videos..
TrickSession.com/forums – The current busiest forum. Tricksters from all over the world gather here every day to share tips, videos, and plan tricking gatherings.
Club540.com/board – Another cool tricking forum, part of a much bigger tricking resource.

Before TrickSession, TricksTutorials hosted the go-to tricking forum. The creator has since made the decision to step out of the busy forum-running spotlight, to focus on his personal training and pursuits. He still provides some good resources, though, which leads me to my next point.

Tricking Resource Websites – Here is a list of useful tricking websites to help you in your journey..
TricksTutorials.com – This site is run by a cool guy who goes by the name of Jujimufu (Juji for short). He started the first tricking forum back at the boom of the movement, was an example to many beginner trickers (myself included), and has written/produced many helpful articles and videos.
Club540.com – Named after one of the first “tricks” you learn, this website provides tricksters a good place to network. They also have their own forums and a very useful resource tor finding new tricks and a suggested “progression” ladder, the Tricktionary.
JustTheSkills.com – I’ve found this website really helpful in the way they present their tutorials. Every move on there is broken down into a helpful series of pictures, and I found that the way the tutorials are narrated really clicks with me.

Facebook Groups – Yes, in this modern day and age we lucky to have facebook groups that are fairly active! Consider checking these out..
You can gain extra inches to your penis size, stronger and longer lasting erections, increased buying that generic cialis online sperm volume, and better sexual stamina and pleasure.
MartialArtsTricking
Tricking Summit

Unfortunately due to the mischievious nature of tricksters, some groups fall into uselessness as they get overwhelmed by troll posts..on we go.

YouTube – This is probably the biggest resource you will ever have for anything in your life. I have learned many things from this modern day “oracle”. YouTube is an amazing place to find tricking tutorials, videos, tips, fitness advice, and tutorials on many different subjects. I cannot keep up with the number of channels being added every day, but here is a starting point on some tutorials for you..

– Start stretching! And keep stretching and taking care of your body throughout your journey…this is just about the biggest advice I can give you in order to avoid injury and accelerate your learning process.
– You have to WANT it and SEE yourself achieving your goals.
– No one will ever give you the advice you seek until you start learning for yourself. Your success depends on your willingness to try, and try again. You determine whether you learn fast, slow, or at all..I’m quite fond of this saying I heard once – “I failed my way to success”.

My friend, stuntman Christopher Tardieu, shared this link with me today. One of his recent projects involved a recurring stunt job for the hit MTV show Teen Wolf. While I don’t particularly watch the show, I thought I’d share this insight with you!

AfterBuzzTV is a website dedicated to bringing after-show interviews and podcasts to various TV series’ fans. They invited Chris as a guest speaker to an interview about various aspects of the MTV show Teen Wolf. The podcast was posted online yesterday. You can skip to 15:20 to see Chris speaking about working with the show’s stunt team, and the different angles they have to take into consideration.

A bit about the show’s premise..

Teen Wolf is an American television series developed by Jeff Davis for MTV. It is loosely based on the 1985 film of the same name. The show’s central character is Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), a high school student and social outcast who is bitten by a werewolf while looking for a dead girl in the woods. – Wikipedia

Working on shows and movies such as these is great, and provides us with a unique challenge. Having a supernatural plot line gives entertainers a chance to experiment with effects we would not normally have access to, and that might not even fit into a “regular” world view.

It’s always great to see stunt men getting recognition for their hard work. Too often, our line of work goes unnoticed in the public eye. Hopefully the trends we are beginning to see, that are bringing us into the forefront, will continue and help our industry continue to prosper.

Until next time,

Barrio Brawler: The Asylum’s gritty answer to the Undisputed series

Barrio Brawler, a gritty mixed martial arts fight film to be released on June 25th, premiered their trailer Tuesday on the film news site TwitchFilm.com.

actor Morgan Benoit backflip kicks his opponent in the face

The central story revolves around a martial arts instructor who is forced to fight in an underground tournament in order to protect his family. Now, while we have all seen this scenario played out on screen in the past, writer Jose Montesinos’ fresh execution promises to offer a primal grittiness and a new perspective. Plus, what can be better for the fight film connoisseur, then to have the opportunity to study another interpretation of highly skilled martial artists engage in a no-holds-barred violent fight tournament? I have been anticipating Barrio Brawler’s release for the last 6 months. My friend and training partner, action actor Morgan Benoit, informed me he had a role as one of the main characters in the film. From what I know so far, Morgan plays one of the main fighters. You can see him (clearly looking like a badass) at 1:09 in the trailer below.

As a fan of the Undisputed film franchise, as well as most (not all) fight films, I’m excited to see this. I know most of the fight performers personally, and I can foresee cult status for this project, as the fights are guaranteed to blow you away.

Barrio Brawler was produced by the independent production house, The Asylum, and features some stunt performers from the San Francisco based group, The Stunt People.

The film is due to be released on June 25 of this year, in AMC Theatres.
